Elegant pears poached in red wine with star anise, cinnamon and orange — naturally sweetened.

Poached Pears in Spiced Red Wine

Ingredients

  • 4 firm pears, peeled with stalks intact
  • 400ml red wine
  • 200ml water
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 star anise
  • Zest of 1 orange

Method

  1. Combine wine, water, honey and spices in a deep pan; bring to a gentle simmer.
  2. Add pears; poach over low heat 25–30 min, turning occasionally, until just tender.
  3. Remove pears; reduce poaching liquid by half.
  4. Serve pears warm or cold with reduced sauce spooned over.
